Indian man divorces wife over phone, victim urges PM Modi to ban this Islamic practice


PATNA: A man from Bihar gave divorce to his young wife by uttering ‘talaq’ some 10th time over phone last week in a latest incident sparking debate over the continuation of this Islamic practice.

The incident comes amid the Supreme Court deciding to hear the petitions challenging the Islamic divorce practice of triple talaq, Nikah halala and polygamy from the next month during the summer vacation.

The local media today reported Mohammad Shah Alam, a resident of Bansapti village in Bhagalpur district, called up his wife Biwi Rukhsar and uttered ‘talaq’ more than 10 times over phone. The man is currently settled in Gujarat.

Reports said the man refused to relent when the local sarpanch tried to mediate in the matter claiming he has the right to divorce his wife under his religious laws.

“Talaq bolkar patni ko chhodana kanoon hai. Isme court me jane ki zaroorat nahin hai (he enjoys the right to divorce his wife by saying talaq. She doesn’t require to move the court),” the man reportedly told the sarpanch.

The victim woman has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to instantly ban this law to save the life of the Muslim women getting ruined.

“Modiji please ban this law soon. It’s ruining lives of Muslim women,” she has requested.
