US considers India a true friend, partner in addressing global challenges: Trump


New Delhi: US President Donald Trump held telephonic conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi last evening for the first time after assuming office past week.

During a call with Prime Minister, President Trump emphasized that the United States considers India a true friend and partner in addressing challenges around the world.

“The two discussed opportunities to strengthen the partnership between the United States and India in broad areas such as the economy and defense. They also discussed security in the region of South and Central Asia,” a statement issued from the office of the Press Secretary, White House said today.

The statement further added, “President Trump and Prime Minister Modi resolved that the United States and India stand shoulder to shoulder in the global fight against terrorism”.

The statement stated President Trump looks forward to hosting Prime Minister Modi in the United States later this year.

The PM Modi too shared his conversation with the US President.

“Had a warm conversation with President @realDonaldTrump late last evening,” Modi tweeted on the phone call with the US leader.

Modi said both of them have agreed to work closely in a bid to strengthen bilateral ties between India and the US.

“President @realDonaldTrump and I agreed to work closely in the coming days to further strengthen our bilateral ties,” Modi said.

The Indian Prime Minister said he has invited Trump to visit India.
