PATNA: Even as Supreme Court verdict brought cheers among the Muslim women across the country as they were seen celebrating the moment by dancing, smearing gulal, offering prayers and distributing sweets, a group of Muslim girls in Bihar protested against the verdict ending the instant divorce law while describing the practice as “unconstitutional”.

The protest took place in Forbesganj town of Araria, a Muslim-dominated district some 350 km east of Patna, on Tuesday.

“Triple talaq is justified. The judgement is against our custom,” they cried. They also shouted slogans against Prime Minister Modi.

The open protests took place shortly after India’s top court today ruled that the triple talaq is “illegal and unconstitutional” and held that the instant divorce law is against the basic tenets of Islam.

Former Bihar minister Abdul Jalil Mastan also expressed annoyance over the SC ruling and said  they would be guided by their own personal law.
