BJP President Amit Shah was present at the programme at which Bahuguna Joshi, daughter of late Congress stalwart Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna, announced her decision.
The 67-year-old leader said she felt it was time to stand behind Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is making sincere efforts to fight terrorism.
She also announced resign from her assembly seat.
“I have sent my resignation letter to the UP Assembly Speaker,” she said.
Bahuguna Joshi was said to be unhappy over the party’s choice of former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, as the chief ministerial candidate in Uttar Pradesh.
