SC notice to EC over PIL seeking Nitish’s disqualification for hiding murder case


PATNA: The Supreme Court today issued a notice to the Election Commission on a petition seeking disqualification of Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar for allegedly hiding a murder case against him.

The EC has been told to file its reply within two weeks. The order came on a criminal petition filed by a SC  lawyer ML Sharma.

Last month, Sharma had filed the petition seeking for disqualification of Nitish Kumar’s House membership for allegedly hiding a murder case pending against him in the court in his poll affidavits twice, according to reports.

Kumar is currently a Member of Bihar Legislative Council, Upper House of the state legislature, and has not fought elections since taking oath as the chief minister in November 2005.

The petitioner has further demanded fresh investigation into the case alleging the chief minister got the police department under him file a “closer report” in the 1991 murder case

The 26-year-old case hit the headlines after RJD chief Lalu Prasad released documents to the media in July shortly after Kumar walked out of the Grand Alliance to form government with the BJP.
