New Delhi: Soon after the Supreme Court judgment on Triple Talaq, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described it as “historic” and called it a move that grants equality to Muslim women.
The prime minister tweeted in support of the historic verdict.

“Judgment of the Hon’ble SC on Triple Talaq is historic. It grants equality to Muslim women and is a powerful measure for women empowerment,” he said.
Earlier, BJP Prsident Amit Shah hailed the SC verdict and called it the “dawn of a new era for Muslim women,” while leaders from the opposition Congress also had the words of kudos for the historic judgement.
“Supreme Court verdict on triple talaq heralds a new era of self-respect and equality for Muslim women,” Shah said in a statement.
“It’s a big win for gender justice and beginning of a new era. Muslim women have been given respect,” he said.

Congress leader Manish Tewari tweeted: “Welcome 3.2 verdict of SC striking down #TripleTalaq. It is a constructive,progressive decision that must be welcomed by all right thinkers.”
Senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid: “What we hoped to happen has now happened, it is a good decision. Yeh faisla sachchai, vastvikta aur sahi Islam ko ujaagar karta hai (This verdict highlights true Islam).
In what is seen as a landmark victory for the Muslim women fighting to scrap the practice of triple talaq, the Supreme Court on Tuesday said the practice is unconstitutional and asked the government to legislate a law in Parliament.
In a 3:2 verdict of the five bench judges’ panel, the apex court said Triple Talaq is unconstitutional and illegal which means it has been struck down.
The Supreme Court also put the ball in the court of the government to frame a law to ban it.
