Rescued Bihar cows die in Jharkhand police custody for want of care

PATNA: Over 60 cows which were recently rescued by the Jharkhand police from cattle smugglers are dying for want of food, reports quoting local media said.

All these cows had been rescued by the Maithon police while they were being transported by the cattle smugglers from Bihar.

However, by the time they were handed over to the gaushalas (cowsheds), five of them had perished.

Reports said initially the police contacted the local gaushalas in the area but it refused to keep them citing lack of space.

Eventually, the rescued cows were sent to a cowshed based at Katras, some 70 km from the local police station, after several rounds of discussion.

However, by the time the cattle were brought in five were declared having brought dead, cowshed officials said.

Reports said the cows perished as they went without fodder and water for over 16 hours in police custody.
