He was instantly rushed to a local hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead. The victim was an accused in a murder case.
Witnesses said the incident caused panic in the court premises as people began fleeing helter-skleter for safety. Taking advantage of this situation, the criminals fled the scene.
As per reports, the victim along with other prisoners had been brought to the court hazat (lock-up) from the local Khudi Ram Bose central jail to be produced in the court. Subsequently, he was being taken to the court room from court hazat under police custody when he was killed midway by the waylaying criminals.
Soon after the incident, the prisoners put in the court lock-up turned angry and tried to break open the lock-up. Senior police officials have rushed to the spot and investigating the case. Reports said the criminals had come on two bikes.
This is the second major attack in the court premises in the past few months. Earlier in January last year, two persons were killed in a bomb blast in the Ara district court. The blast was allegedly carried out to help some under-trials flee.
In another incident, a drug trader was killed by criminals in Patna early today. The victim Anil Kumar was opening his medical shop located in the Govind Mitra road locality of the state capital when some bike-borne criminals fired at him from a close range. He was instantly rushed to the nearby Patna Medical College and Hospital but could not survive.
