Mahoba: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday joined the debate on triple talaq saying he won’t allow the lives of Muslim women to be ruined by the practice.
“Tell me what is the crime of my Muslim sisters that someone says talaq over phone and her life is going to be destroyed,” asked Modi, addressing a rally in Uttar Pradesh today.

He added the lives of Muslim women cannot be ruined by triple talaq.
Earlier this month, the Indian government ruled that the practice of triple talaq by Muslims has no place in a secular country in an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court, evoking string protests from various Muslim bodies.
While the religious groups of Muslims have opposed the government move, Muslim women have come out in support.
But, the Narendra Modi government has announced not to change its position on the issue, citing the issue of gender equality and dignity of women in India.
