PM condoles death of villagers in lightning strikes

PATNA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today expressed grief over death of people in lightening strikes in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand.

“Deeply anguished by loss of lives due to lightning in parts of UP, Bihar, Jharkhand and other parts of the nation over the last few days,” the PM tweeted today.

He added, “My thoughts and prayers are with those who lost their near and dear ones due to lightning”.

At least, 110 people were killed when lightning struck the three states over the past 24 hours.

However, major casualties were reported from Bihar which alone reported 57 deaths.

Reports said a maximum of 25 deaths were reported from five districts of Rohtas, Patna, Aurangabad, Nalanda and Purnia.

Similarly, it claimed three lives each in Buxur, Saran, Kaimur, Saharsa and Katihar while two each died in Bhojpur, Samastipur, Bhagalpur and Munger. The remaining deaths were reported from Valmikinagar and Madhepura.

The state government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 400,000 to each victim family.

The state witnesses first Monsoon shower last evening. The meteorological department has predicted more rains in the next few days.

In neighbouring Jharkhand state, lightning is learnt to have claimed 10 lives while in Uttar Pradesh, at least 43 people were killed in lightning strike.
