Pangs of superstition: Mob burns to death three members of a family in Jharkhand

RANCHI: Police have arrested 17 villagers hours after three members of a family were burnt to death in Jharkhand on the suspicion of being “tantric” (black magician).

The horrible incident took place at Chipo Thekka Toli village in Lohardagga district of Jharkhand state late Sunday night.

Police said an angry mob of villagers raided the house of Govardhan Bhagat on the suspicion that he had abducted a boy for human sacrifice. The mob went on the rampage soon after being informed the body of a child has been found at the village.

Reports said the angry villagers raided the house from all sides. As they were attacked, the family members locked themselves up from inside after which the mob set the house on fire, killing three members of a family.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested 17 persons in this connection whereas raids are on to nab the remaining eight accused persons.

Last year, villagers had killed five tribal women suspecting them to be practicing witchcraft. The victims were killed in a very brutal manner. According to police, they were dragged out of their homes and had their heads crushed with stones and other hard objects.
