PATNA: A newly-wed woman in Bihar divorced her husband for not having a toilet in in-laws’ house.
Archana Gautam, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, was married to Babloo Ram of Khotahawa village in West Champaran district in May this year.
However, when she reached her in-laws’ house after marriage, she was shocked to find no toilet at home and asked her in-laws’ to arrange for one as soon as possible but the latter ignored her demand.
Eventually, she called a meeting of her village panchayat on Thursday and served a divorce notice to her husband before the panchayt members. Subsequently, she left for her parent’s home.
“I was forced to give divorce as my in-laws’ refused to take notice of my request,” the woman told the panchayat.
She added, “I was forced to make way to an open field every day under the cover of darkness to relieve myself. The owner of the land repeatedly insulted me.”
Millions of households in Bihar don’t have toilets as villagers are forced defecate in an open field.
