NCW serves notice on Sharad Yadav for ‘sexist’ comment, party defends

PATNA: The National Commission for Women today issued a show-cause notice to former JD-U president Sharad Yadav after he made a public remark saying he gives more importance to the honour of a vote than that of a daughter.

“People need to be educated about the ballot paper. The integrity of a vote is bigger than the integrity of a daughter. If a daughter loses honour, only the village loses its honour. But, if a vote is sold, the entire nation will lose its honour,” Yadav said while addressing a function in Patna yesterday.

Approached by media for his comments after the NCW notice, Yadav denied he said anything wrong.

“We have been saying this for past 25 years. All I want to say is vote is the engine/ driving force of the Constitution. Love and respect for vote and daughter should be the same. Everyone has a perspective,” he told

The JD-U spokesperson KC Tyagi came to the defence of Yadav saying his statement was “misinterpreted”. “What he meant to say was to describe the importance of votes,” he clarified.
