The officials against whom action were initiated included Motilal, jail superintendent, Ramanand Pandit, assistant jailer, Ramesh Kumar and Ram Lakhan Yadav, both wardens.

The mutton party was hosted in the Biharsharif jail where the suspended RJD legislator Yadav is currently lodged in connection with allegedly raping a minor girl.

Reports said the Nalanda district magistrate Thiyagarajan SM constituted a three-member inquiry committee over reports that jailed legislator had given a grand feast to thousands of inmates lodged there during the festival earlier this week.

During the extensive inquiry lasting for some eight hours, the probe team extensively checked the jail’s entry and stock registers, and also talked to the inmates over the issue.

Reports said the inmates confirmed having enjoyed mutton, ‘puri and other sweet delicacies during Holi thanks to the “benevolence” of the Nawada legislator although the jail’s registers did not mention about this anywhere.

“I have recommended suspension of jail superintendent Motilal and assistant jailor Ram Nandan Pandit after a report from the three-member committee which noticed some irregularities in special facilities given to jail inmates and found violation of jail manuals (during Holi),” the Nalanda DM told the local media today.

The DM wondered as to how did the prisoners eat food when the jail’s stock registers did not mention about the food materials brought from outside. As per reports, mutton was brought from outside on the instruction of the mighty legislator lodged in the jail as the jail officials turned a blind eyes to all these happenings.

Yadav has been cooling his heels in the jail for the past over a fortnight after he surrendered in a local court on March 10 after remaining out of police reach for over a month.

The accused was forced to surrender after the authorities launched drive to seize his landed properties as he remained out of police reach for over a month.

The accused who has a long controversial past hit the headlines when a class 10 girl student registered a rape case with the local police last month. As per her complaint, a middle aged woman lured her to attend a birthday party in the locality but handed her over to the legislator in exchange for Rs 30,000.

The legislator allegedly raped her the whole night after blackmailing her in many ways. Taking the matter seriously, the ruling Nitish Kumar government has ordered speedy trial of his case.
