LUCKNOW: The BJP headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was heading for a landslide victory in politically-significant Uttar Pradesh—the state which gave maximum number of seats to the party in the last Lok Sabha polls.
The available trend in the initial phase of counting has indicated the BJP was heading for a historic two-third majority in the State where it failed to form its government post Babri incident.

Of 341 seats out of total 403 of which the counting trend came in, the BJP was leading over 232 seats whereas the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) were leading over only 69 and 27 seats respectively.
The elections had become a prestige issue for PM given the fact that he paid so much attention to the polls and launched intensive campaign there.
It was also a challenge for the party to win UP at all costs given the embarrassing defeat in neighbouring Bihar during the last 2015 assembly polls.
The elections were also widely described as a “referendum” on Center’s demonetisation drive given the fact that it was first major elections after the Narendra Modi government launched it in November last.
The trend seems to be indicating the common men have supported the government’s initiatives.
The trend is especially a huge setback for the Akhilesh Yadav the way he rebelled against his father-uncle duo and finally managed to get his claim over the party’s official Cycle symbol.
A ‘free-minded’ Akhilesh then entered into an alliance with another youngster Rahul Gandhi of the Congress with the slogan “UP ko yah saath pasand hai”.
If the counting trend is any indication, the people of UP didn’t like their friendship and dumped them.
