Maoist rebels kill four labourers in Jharkhand

PATNA: Armed Maoist rebels shot dead four labourers in Gumala district of neighbouring Jharkhand on Thursday, triggering a wave of panic in the area.

Media reports said the labourers were engaged in road construction works at Basia village when the rebels descended on the scene and resorted to indiscriminate firing, killing four of them on the spot.

The reason behind the gruesome killing is not known but it is believed the incident could be linked to levy matters.

Jharkhand is one of the many states in India plagued by Maoist insurgency. According to an official report, Maoists operate in 60 districts in India, mainly in the states of Orissa, Jharkhand, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and West Bengal.
