The new name is likely to be “Bengal” in English and “Banga or Bangla” in Bengali.
Trinamool Congress sources said a special assembly session of the West Bengal would be convened on August 26 to discuss the issue of name change.
“For the sake of the people of the state, its heritage and culture as well as to promote and protect its interests at the national level, we have proposed to rename West Bengal as Bengal in English and ‘Banga’ or Bangla in Bengali,” West Bengal education minister Partha Chatterjee told the media today.
The demand for changing the state’s name had been pending for long.
In 2011, the ruling Mamata Banerjee government had proposed to rename West Bengal as “Paschimbanga” but the idea couldn’t see the light of the day.
