A close aide of West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and Minister for Urban Development and Municipal affairs Bobby Firhad Hakim has kicked up a major controversy by describing a part of his state as “Mini Pakistan”.

The minister made this remarks in apparent reference to Garden Reach Assembly Constituency in South 24 Pargana district while talking to a leading Pakistan daily, the local media reported today.

The Trinamool Congress leadership was quick to distance itself from the remark saying “It does not agree to such views provided he actually said so”.

The BJP reacted angrily saying it would lodge a complaint with the Election Commission of India.

Right now, assembly elections are underway in West Bengal to elect a new government as the term of the ruling Mamata Banerjee government ends next month.
