Major fire breaks out in Indian army’s biggest ammunition depot, 20 dead


PATNA: At least 20 people, including two army officials, were reported killed after a major fire broke out in one of India’s biggest arms depot in Pulgaon in Maharashtra late Monday night.

Television news channels reported that a massive explosion rocked the depot spread over in about 10,000 acres after the fire broke out shortly past midnight.

The entire area has been cordoned off and at least three neighbouring villages have been vacated as a precautionary measure, reports said.

The reason behind the incident is not known although a court of inquiry has been ordered in the incident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today expressed grief over the incident.

“Pained by loss of lives caused by a fire at central ammunition depot in Pulgaon, Maharashtra. My thoughts are with the bereaved families,” the PM tweeted today, wishing a speedy recovery for those wounded in the incident.
