PATNA: At least 30 villagers were killed in lightning strikes in several districts of Bihar in the past 24 hours.
Most of the deaths were reported from Purnia, Bhagalpur, Munger, Begusarai, Saharsa, Araria, Katihar, Jamui, Khagaria, Madhepura, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Sitamarhi and Gaya districts.

The most tragic incident was reported from Purnia district where three members of a family were killed in lightning strike. The victims included all women.
Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar has expressed grief over the incident and also announced a compensation of Rs4 lakh to each victim family.
The incident comes close on the heels of deaths of over 200 villagers from severe heat waves in south Bihar and over 170 children from suspected encephalitis in north Bihar with Muzaffapur district the worst victim.
