Key suspect in Rs1,000 cr Srijan scam dies under mysterious circumstances in Bihar

PATNA: A key suspect in the Rs 1,000 crore (Rs 10 billion) NGO fund transfer scam Mahesh Mandal has died under mysterious condition in a hospital in Bhagalpur late Sunday night.

Mandal who was nazir in the welfare department had been arrested last Sunday and was suffering from diabetics and kidney problems.

On Sunday, his condition suddenly deteriorated after which he was rushed to a local hospital in Bhagalpur, the centre of scam, but he died soon thereafter.

Angry family members created ruckus at the hospital after his death and blamed the authorities for not providing adequate medical treatment.

“He could have revealed many layers of the scam had he been alive,” victim family alleged.

Last week, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar recommended for a CBI probe into the Rs 1,000 crore fund transfer scam involving a Bhagalpur-based NGO Srijan.

Many political bigwigs, government officials and bank officers are alleged to be involved in the scam.

The chief minister made the recommendation for the CBI investigation after holding a meeting with the home secretary, chief secretary, director general of police and DIG of Economic Offences Wing on Thursday evening.

The opposition RJD had been demanding for a CBI probe into the scam since long.

However, the announcement came hours after the Leader of opposition in Bihar assembly Tejashwi Yadav accused the state government of shielding the corrupt after he was denied permission to hold a meeting in Bhagalpur today.

The RJD was quick to question Nitish Kumar’s zero-tolerance policy towards corruption after the state government denied the permission for the meeting.

The SIT of Bihar police probing the scam involving public embezzlement of government money by a Bhagalpur-based NGO named Srijan Mahila Vikas Sahyog Samiti has so far arrested 10 persons including the stenographer of Bhagalpur DM.
