PATNA: Watching our national bird dancing on the streets of busy Patna could very soon be a reality for the passersby. Authorities in Bihar are planning to relocate 100 peacocks in the New Capital Area covering Raj Bhawan, CM House, Bihar government secretariat and Ecological Park to give a new look to the city.
Authorities from the Environment and Forest Department say leaving the national birds in the open could serve twin purposes—Firstly, it will add to the beauty of the state capital and secondly, it will also maintain ecological balance given the fact that it feats on insects. Leaving the birds in the open will also help increase their population.

So far, five peacocks have been left out in the open in the New Capital Area while the government plans to relocate some 100 of them.
“We are planning to relocate peacocks near the Raj Bhawan and Eco Park areas as the region has good many trees and greenery enough to make them calmly settle,” additional chief forest conservator SS Chaudhary told the media today. He said the number of birds in the areas would be slowly increased depending on their availability.
Chaudhary said the department concerned had deployed Patna forest division employees to keep a watch on the freely-moving peacocks and to ensure none could harm them.
The authorities have also made public some mobile numbers to help people inform them in case the birds are in trouble or somebody is trying to harm them.
The other problem for the authorities is that the Patna International Airport is close to the areas where peacocks are being relocated and they apprehend they could enter into the restricted zones of the airport which could pose threats to the movement of planes.
So far, Madhopur-Govindpur village which falls under the east Chamaparan district of Bihar was known as the ‘village of peacocks’ where the villagers proudly coexisted with the national birds for year. The village is home to some 500 peacocks.
Recently, chief minister Nitish Kumar had paid a visit to this village and directed the authorities to take steps to protect peacocks and ensure their safe breeding. Now, Patna too could boast of their own peacocks jumping or walking on the streets!
