Investigation begins in Patna boat disaster as Opp steps up pressures on govt


PATNA: Authorities launched a formal investigation into the deadly boat disaster on Tuesday after the Opposition parties stepped up pressures on the state government.

The two-member committee comprising disaster management secretary Pratyaya Amrit and deputy inspector general of police Shalin has been entrusted with the responsibility to conduct the investigation.

“We have formally investigation. We are investigating every aspects of the incident,” Amrit told the media on Tuesday.

He along with another probe committee member was seen visiting the place of occurrence and making a site inspection.

Yesterday, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar had said he was shocked at the incident and had asked to investigate as to at whose level the kite flying festival was organized and how his photographed was used in the advertisement issued by the tourism development without his permission.

At least 25 people were killed when an overcrowded boat sank in river Ganga near NIT ghat in Patna on Saturday evening. Most of the victims were from poor background.

The incident took place when the victims were returning on an overcrowded boat after the kite flying festival which was organized by the state tourism department.

The opposition parties have blamed negligence on the part of the state government for the incident.
