PATNA: Angry villagers today brutally killed a bear in Bihar after it wounded a police official who had come to protect them from the wild animal.
The horrible incident took place early Friday morning at Tataria village in Jamui district which shares borders with neighbouring Jharkhand state.
Reports said the villagers had gone to attend Nature’s call at a nearby canal early this morning when the bear attacked them, wounding at least six of them.
Soon after getting information, the local police inspector reached the spot and tried to corner the animal but it also attacked him.
Witnesses said the police official reacted by opening fire at the animal which tried to flee the scene but the local villagers surrounded them from sides and killed the bear on the spot attacking the animal with bamboo sticks and other traditional weapons.
The animal is believed to have sneaked into the village from the neighbouring forests. The wounded police official in the meanwhile has been admitted to a government hospital for treatment.
The killing of wild animals is nothing new to Bihar. In March this year, the police had arrested a poacher who was accused of killing as many as nine tigers at Balmiki Tiger Reserve in Bihar’s West Champaran district. The cruel poacher died of heart attack earlier this month.
