As per media reports, a marriage procession had come to village Khutanua-Nautoli village from nearby Padwa-Pachhar village on Tuesday night. Everything was fine till the groom and the bride exchanged the garlands.

However, once this ritual was over, the groom along with his cousin reached the main road near the venue and had heavy drinks there. Both lost their consciousness soon thereafter.

Witnesses said when the groom came for wedding at night, he kept calling for beer. Upon being refused, he began creating ruckus and misbehaving with the guests, angry the bride who was waiting in bridal attire to complete the marriage rituals.

In a fit of rage, the bride refused to marry with the groom. Even as the groom side appeared shell-shocked after hearing her decision, the bride went inside the room, came with soot in her hands and then blackened groom’s face before also treating him with a garland of shoes. Reports said she also beat up the groom.

Reports said the groom family was allowed to go home only after they agreed to return the dowry they had taken in exchange for marriage.

A couple of months ago, a Muslim girl Fatima Firdausi, a resident of Chakhasim village in eastern Bihar’s Munger district, had rejected a groom after his family sought a hefty dowry in lieu of solemnization of marriage.

“Dowry is a bigger evil for the society and every girl from the country should raise their voice against it,” was how told the local media after rejecting the marriage proposal with her faces partly veiled.

According to a rough estimate, more than 50 girls form Bihar have refused to marry grooms for various reasons, such as for being ugly, partly literate, drunk or seeking dowry.
