The man was taken into custody yesterday after the victim’s mother rushed to the local police station in Patna and registered a formal complaint against her husband, asking the police to initiate severe punitive action against the accused.

Police have registered the case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offence Act. The 13-year-old victim is a grade five student.

The victim’s mother dared to file a case against her husband after her daughter suffered extreme mental trauma. “Initially I thought to ignore the incident but when I found the situation going out of control, I decided to report the matter to the police,” victim’s mother told the police.

According to her, the accused first targeted the victim while she was 10-year-old. “She (the victim) had just reached home from the school when he sexually abused her, while threatening her not to reveal it to anyone. When I came to know, he even threatened me with dire consequences and asked me keep my mouth shut,” she added.

The victim’s tale of woes moved the cops at the police station to tears. “My father had been sexually abusing me for the past three years. He would beat me up whenever I protested and threatened me with dire consequences if I dared to tell it to anyone,” the victim told the police.

“The police have arrested the accused while the victim is being sent for medical examination,” the station house officer of Woman police station Neelmani said.

Rape cases have assumed alarming proportions in Bihar in recent years.
