“Habitual” Indian groom with many wives sent to jail
PATNA: Police in the eastern Indian state of Bihar have arrested a “habitual groom” who would marry women and then abandon them after some time looking for other preys. The accused identified as Mohammad Aslam, train hawker, is a resident of Pali village under Pali police station in Patna district.
The whole story came to light after one of his wives Naurin suddenly reached Aslam’s rented house at Koilwar town in Bhojpur district on Saturday on being informed that he is planning to marry another woman, and much to her surprise found another woman in home claiming to be his wife. The man had married Naurin barely two months back on December 28.
Instead of indulging in dogfight, his wives acted prudently and decided to teach their husband a lesson by handing him over to the local police. In the meantime, the man who was away reached his home, and was just puzzled to see his wives standing before him.
Before he could understand, the women picked up bread rollers, ladle or other such kitchen items in their hands and began thrashing him mercilessly. They kicked and punched as he lay on the ground, praying for mercy. Job done, the women dragged him to the nearest Koilwar police station and registered a case against him. The police later sent him to jail along with a broker Mohammad Badruddin who had played key roles in luring the gullible women and convincing them to marry the man.
As per reports, the accused would marry the women presenting himself as a “bachelor” and then abandon them after sometime while moving to new areas in search of other preys. The man is believed to have married at least women in places like Jehanabad, Bhojpur (Bihar) and Moghulsarai (Uttar Pradesh). The police are now looking for his other wives.
However, this is not the lone case in Bihar. In 2014, the Bihar police had arrested 35 year-old Mohammad Sijam who married as many as 72 women by presenting himself as a railway official and promising them to have a luxurious married life. The homes of his wives were spread from Bihar to neighbouring West Bengal.
The modus operandi of the cheat was that he would stay in the house of his every newly-wed “wife” for a fortnight and would flee the scene with all the valuables saying he has been transferred to some other places and would return back soon but he never came back. Reports said he would present himself as a Hindu before the Hindu girls and a Muslim before the Muslim girls to win their confidence.
During the interrogation, he revealed he had married girls in several districts of Bihar, such as, West Champaran, East Champaran,Sitamarhi, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, Begusarai, Purnia, Madhepura, Kishanganj, Araria and Katihar. He also had married girls in Midnapur, Asansol, Howrah, Malda and Sialdah districts of West Bengal.
