Gwalior zoo shut down after 15 painted storks die of avian flue

Bhopal/Gwalior: The Gwalior Zoo was shut down on Saturday following lab tests confirming that the 15 storks have died from bird flu, according to media reports.

The zoo has decided to cull the remaining 12 painted storks as a precautionary measure, media reported.

Earlier, the Delhi Zoo went through a similar scare a few days ago and was shut after the death of 10 birds.

The Hauz Khas Deer Park in New Delhi was also closed after eight birds succumbed to suspected bird flu.

The Centre, on Friday, issued guidelines for state governments and zoo officials for “control and containment” of bird flu, or avian influenza, media reported.

According to media reports, the Centre has said the virus strains in the bird flu cases at the Delhi and Gwalior zoos were found to be “less infectious”, having no known case of impact on human.
