Gaya gang-rape victim paraded through streets on village court’s order, BJP condemns

PATNA: A gang-rape victim was paraded through the village streets in Bihar after getting her hair cut for bringing the incident to the knowledge of the local village court.

The horrible incident took place in Mohanpur blcok of Gaya district in the weekend, media reports have said.

As per the reports in the local media, the teenaged victim had gone out to meet nature’s call on August 14 when car-borne youths kidnapped her, took her to a secluded location and gang-raped her.

They also warned her of dire consequences if she dared to report the case to the police. According to hr, six youths committed the crime.

Reports said when the victim reported the matter to the local villagers, they held a court at which they raised question over her character and ordered her to be paraded through the streets after getting her hair cut.

Terrified victim family initially remained silent but they finally reported the matter to the senior police officials in Gaya town after which a case was finally registered on Sunday.

“We have registered the case against the accused persons and further investigation is on,” Gaya’s senior superintendent of police Manjit told the media on Monday.

The police said they have registered a case against 11 persons including six jury members of the local village court which ordered for parading the rape victim.

The State Women Commission (SWC) too has taken cognizance of the incident and has written to the police concerned for necessary action against the accused persons.

“The police should act immediately and arrest the accused persons,” SWC chairperson Dilmani Mishra told the media on Monday.

The opposition parties slammed Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar for allegedly failing to curb crime and suggested him to resign if he was unable to properly run the government.

The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) which is a partner in the ruling NDA government in Bihar too condemned the act and asked the government to act fast.

“The incident is not tolerable. Severe punitive action must be taken against the culprits,” BJP spokesperson Ajit Chaudhary said.
