PATNA: A 60-year-old woman in Bihar was undressed, dragged by her sari and thrashed by a group of horse-riding criminals for not paying Rs 5 lakh extortion they had demanded.
The incident took place in Shankarpur diyara located under Nathnagar police station in Bhagalpur district on Saturday but was reported in the media today.
Reports said the victim woman identified as Urmila Devi was guarding her Urad (black lentils) crops in the field when a group of criminals reached there and assaulted her with rifle butts.
They also wounded her with a farming tool and then dragged her by her sari for some distance, angry at not paying extortion.
The criminals fled the scene after local villagers rushed to the spot for help. The victim has been admitted at a local hospital for treatment.
“The criminals have been eyeing my 20 acres of land which they want to grab,” victim’s husband Siyaram Mandal told the local police.
He has registered a case against 14 persons in this connection. Police are investigating the case.
“We are conducting raids to nab the criminals. We have also intensified patrolling in the Shankarpur diyara,” a local police official Md Janiff Uddin was quoted as saying in the local media today.
