Engineer arrested red-handing taking Rs16 lakh as bribe in Bihar
PATNA: Vigilance sleuths in Bihar on Monday arrested a corrupt engineer accepting a bribe of Rs16 lakh (Rs1.6 million).
The arrested engineer identified as Arvind Kumar was posted with the Road Construction department in Katihar district and was reportedly taking the first installment of Rs 16 lakh out of the total Rs83 lakh bribe money he had sought.
Reports quoting unnamed vigilance officials said the arrested executive engineer had demand the Rs83 lakh bribe in lieu of clearing Rs83 crore (Rs830 million) road project to a contractor.
Acting on a complaint that the accused was seeking huge money as bribe, the vigilance sleuths laid the trap and arrested the engineer from his Patna residence today while accepting the bribe money.
Unconfirmed reports said the family members of the engineer even tried to burn down the huge amount of hard cash stored in the house after coming to know about the vigilance raids.
During the search operation which followed thereafter, the vigilance sleuths have stumbled upon huge property owned by the engineer. The raids were still continuing.
Earlier in June this year too, the vigilance sleuths had arrested another engineer Suresh Prasad Singh while receiving a bribe of Rs 14 lakh (Rs1.4 million) in cash from a contractor in lieu of awarding a road construction contract.
In course of searches conducted at his house, the sleuths further recovered cash totaling Rs2.36 crore (Rs23.6 million) from his home.
During the raid, the authorities also stumbled upon several land plots of the engineer in Patna and Noida, huge investment through 26 LIC policies and also investment in foreign banks.
