Encephalitis outbreak: Juicy Muzaffarpur litchis get ‘defamed’ for no faults!
HEALTH EXPERTS DON'T FIND ANY CONNECTION BETWEEN LITCHIS AND SUSPECTED ENCEPHALITIS
PATNA: In a relief to litchi growers, the juicy fruits grown in the Muzaffarpur district of Bihar have not been found to the real cause of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) which has claimed more than a thousand lives of children in the past few years.
Several researches conducted between 2012 and 2019 have not identified litchis as the cause of AES, media reports said on Friday.
Now, authorities in Bihar have urged the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to remove from its list litchis as one of the main causes of AES outbreak.
“We are trying to remove the misconception. Litchi was never the cause of AES outbreak in Bihar and now experts too have made this clear,” an official with District Vector-borne Disease Control Department, Muzaffarpur Dr Satish Kumar was quoted as saying in the local media on Friday.
Suspected encephalitis has claimed lives of 162 children in Bihar this year out of 628 admitted to the hospitals with this disease.
