PATNA: A Muslim minister in Bihar is totally against legislating harsh laws to control population and has cited “poverty and illiteracy” as the main reasons behind booming population in the Muslim families.
“Poverty and illiteracy are to be blamed for Muslim families producing more children. Just address these twin issues and the main problem will get automatically solved,” Bihar minority affairs minister Abdul Ghafoor told the media in Patna on Monday.

He claimed the literate and well to do Muslim families with high level of awareness level are already strictly following the family planning policy.
“It’s a matter of survey. Go and check,” he explained.
He said the educated families—whether they are from Hindu or Muslim communities—understand the problem of population boom but the illiterate class is not aware of this.
“So need of the hour is to educate them,” the minister opined.
A debate over population boom in the Muslim families has suddenly started ahead of UP assembly elections.
The debate was kick-started by firebrand BJP leader and Union minister Giriraj Singh who has sought for a strong population control act including sterilization to check population boom. Singh represents Nawada (Bihar) seat in Lok Sabha.
His demand has been backed by BJP parliamentarian and former state party chief Gopal Narayan Singh.
