Cong cancels Shakeel Ahmad’s membership for contesting against official nominee
Ahmad is contesting as Independent candidate from Madhubani seat
PATNA: The Congress party has finally cancelled the membership of senior party leader Shakeel Ahmad who is contesting against official Grand Alliance candidate from Madhubani seat.
Ahmad who served as union minister in the UPA government has filed his nomination from this seat as an Independent candidate after being denied ticket from the seat that he represented twice in the past.
Madhubani seat has gone to the Vikashseel Insan Party (VIP) share under the seat-sharing arrangement. VIP headed by Mukesh Sahni is a constituency of the Grand Alliance.
As such, this seat was the bone of contention between the Congress and its allies. The situation turned bitter after the Congress leader filed his nomination from the seat. Madhubani goes to poll in the fifth phase.
“The primary membership of Shakeel Ahmad already remains cancelled for going against the party line and jumping into the contest as an independent against the official nominee,” Congress spokesperson Prem Chandra Mishra told the media on Sunday.
Yet, Ahmad’s entry into the contest has made going tough for the official VIP candidate Badri Kumar Purve.
Prior to Ahmad joining the fray, the contest for Madhubani was strait between BJP candidate Ashok Yadav and VIP nominee Purbe.
But post his entry, the contest has turned triangular and his move is set to spoil victory chances of the VIP candidate as Ahmad could split the Muslim votes.
RJD leader Ali Ashraf Fatmi too had filed nominations from this seat as an Independent but he withdrew his nomination later.
