Children throng Bihar police station after Muslim villager marries for the third time


PATNA: As many as 13 children of a man rushed to a police station in Bihar after their father abandoned their mothers to marry another woman.

The bizarre incident took place in Muzaffarpur district, some 80 km north of Patna, yesterday.

The incident comes amid the Supreme Court announcing to hear the petitions challenging the Islamic divorce practice of triple talaq, Nikah halala and polygamy from the next month during the summer vacation.

According to reports, Mohammad Gaffar, resident of Manika-Vishunpur Chand village, had married two women Najma Khatoon and Samila Khatoon earlier. From both, the man had 13 children.

“But very recently, my father has married another woman and is asking us to leave his home. He has been beating to force us leave his home,” the children told the police, seeking help.

The mothers who accompanied the children demanded arrest of the man. The police are looking into the complaint.
