Candidate jailed after he comes to file nomination papers drunk in ‘dry’ Bihar

PATNA: A candidate who came to file nomination papers under the influence of liquor has been jailed in Bihar.
Officials said Rajiv Kumar Singh looked staggering as he entered into the office of the district returning officer in southern Bihar’s Purnia district on Wednesday.
He was soon taken into custody and made to undergo breathalyzer test which confirmed the man had indeed consumed liquor. Subsequently, he was arrested and sent o jail.
“The candidate was arrested soon after he had filed papers,” the district returning officer Pradeep Kumar Jha told the Hindustan Times on Wednesday.
Singh had filed papers as an independent candidate and was contesting the Lok Sabha polls for the first time.
This was the probably for the first time that any candidate was arrested for coming to the returning officer’s office drunk.
Bihar has enforced total prohibition two years back, as per an official report, more than 100,000 people have been arrested for breaking the liquor law.
