PATNA: Former Bihar chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi has demand that the next President of the country should be from Dalit community—a move which has created unease in both BJP and non-BJP parties.
Manjhi who himself is a Dalit, heads the Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) which is an ally of the BJP. The former CM even called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the issue.

“India’s next president should be a Dalit as it will send a positive message to the deprived and the most marginalized sections as well as provide a feeling of honour,” Manjhi was quoted by news agency IANS as having said in a Press statement issued today.
Till now, only KR Narayanan happened to be the President from the Dalit community. He was elected in 1997 and his term ended in 2002.
The talks about the next Presidential candidate have gained momentum as the term of the present President Pranab Mukherjee is coming to a close now. His five-year term will expire in July this year.
