PATNA: The poverty ratio in Bihar has reduced by 20.7 percentage points in the first decade of the century owing to various poverty alleviation measures launched by the state government, according to a new Bihar Economic Survey.
The report of the survey was tabled on the floor of the Bihar assembly on Thursday when its month-long budget session started.

“Between 2004-05 and 2011-12, the poverty ratio in Bihar was reduced by 20.7 percentage points, from 54.4 percent in 2004-05 to 33.7 in 2011-12,” the report.
“It is heartening to note that the reduction in poverty ratio in rural areas of Bihar (21.6 percentage point) was higher than the urban areas (12.5 percentage point),” the report revealed
According to the report, the state government’s initiative Jeevika has played a significant role in reducing the level of poverty.
“Jeevika has organized 70.98 lakh households into 5.57 lakh households Self-Help Groups (SHG) till October 16. In the same period, 3.03 lakh SHGs have been linked with banks and they were able to obtain a total loan of Rs 2,113 crore,” says the reports.
