Bihar woman becomes pregnant six years after sterilization surgery, seeks compensation


PATNA: A woman in Bihar has sought compensation from a government hospital when she became pregnant six years after she had undergone sterilization surgery.

Lalita Devi, a resident of Jamui district in Bihar, said she had undergone sterilization surgery at a local primary health centre, Gidhaur, in 2013.

She said she noticed something wrong in August this year. A subsequent medical test conducted on her later confirmed she was two-month pregnant.

“We are now very upset over the negligence of the hospital. The government should provide me compensation and also initiate action against the accused doctor,” the victim has demanded.

The incident has exposed the gross negligence on the part of the health centres in the name of sterilization operations.

Similar incidents were reported from neighbouring Odisha in 2017 when as many as 353 women had got pregnant in a year after sterilization surgery.
