Bihar man gives triple talaq over phone after wife gives birth to twin girls

PATNA: A man from Bihar has given triple talaq to his wife after she gave birth to twin baby girls. This comes after the Indian government passed the bill from the Parliament to tackle existing Islamic practice of instant divorce.
The incident took place at Maheshpur village located under Sadar police station in Supaul district. According to the complainant, the accused gave talaq by phone from Saudi Arabia where he currents works.
Farzana had been married with Ekramul some six years back but right since marriage she was being tortured by in-laws for dowry, according to a report.
Her torture increased manifold soon after she gave birth to twin girls recently and reached climax when her husband called her up to give triple talaq.
On Sunday, the victim woman reached the local police station to register a case with the police. The police have registered the case and interrogating the in-laws.
The talaq comes shortly after the contentious Triple Talaq Bill was today passed by the Rajya Sabha last week. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2019 criminalises the instant divorcing of wives by the Muslim men.
The bill had been a bone of contention between the NDA government and the opposition since it was first tabled in the House in 2017 but last week in a significant development, it also got passed by the Rajya Sabha where the BJP is not in a majority.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described the passage of the bill as a victory of gender justice.
