Bihar IAS officer jailed for taking bribe on very first posting of his career

PATNA: In a first, a young Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer was arrested and sent to jail late last night for allegedly taking bribe on very first posting of his career in Bihar.

Dr Jitendra Gupta who was posted as the Sub-Divisional Officer at Mohania in Kaimur district allegedly sought Rs 145,000 for releasing four trucks he had seized over “overloading” charges on July 4.

After much bargaining, the deal was settled for Rs 80,000 but in the meantime, the truck owner reported the matter to the state vigilance department which laid the trap.

On Tuesday night, hardly had Gupta taken the bribe through his driver, a team of vigilance officials raided his home and recovered the cash from hi possession, leading to his arrest.

The sleuths also arrested his driver and one of the house guards who were involved in the shoddy deals.

Late on Wednesday night, Gupta was produced in a vigilance court in Patna which remanded him to 14-day judicial custody. This was preceded by his grueling interrogation all through the day.

This was the first posting of 2013-batch IAS officer from Bihar cadre.

The government said the accused official would be placed under suspension very soon.
