Bihar: ‘Dead’ man returns home three months later
PATNA: Police investigation has come under fire in Bihar after a man returned home three months after being declared “dead “by the police.
Krishna Manjhi, 32, a resident of Naubatpur block in Patna district, had been declared to have been killed by a lynch mob in August this year. Subsequently, his family even cremated his body.
What was further interesting in the matter was that the police arrested 23 persons in connection with the “lynching” of Manjhi and then declared the case formally closed.
The whole case took an interesting turn yesterday when “dead” man suddenly returned to his home.
While his unexpected return brought sudden happiness to his family, it has caused much embarrassment to the police which had declared him as “dead”.
The Naubatpur police station inspector Samrat Deepak told the Hindustan Times that they have reopened the case and further efforts are on to identify the body mistaken for Manjhi. He said the police have preserved the DNA and the photographs of the dead man.
Manjhi’s wife Rubi Devi has told the media that she identified the body as that of her husband because of heavy police pressures.
