Bihar cleric to boycott marriages of Muslim villagers not owning toilets at home


PATNA: A Muslim cleric from Bihar has announced not to solemnize the marriage of villagers who don’t have toilets at home.

The announcement has been made by Mufti Qasmi, a Muslim cleric from Saharsa district.

“I have decided not to read our nikahnamas in the homes which don’t have toilets,” Maulana Qasmi told the media today.

Qasmi who is currently posted as a head teacher at a primary school, Balu Tola in Saharsa claims to have solemnized over 400 marriages so far.

He has also been encouraging the schoolchildren to maintain cleanliness at homes and around.

Bihar is poor on cleanliness indicators and quite many families still don’t have toilets at home despite intensive cleanliness drive launched by the government.

According to an official report, around 16.5 million households out of over 110 million populations in Bihar currently do not have toilets in their home, forcing them to defecate in the open.
