Guwahati: The Crime branch of Assam Police arrested a Meghalaya legislator who was absconding after his name emerged as an accused in the rape case of a 14-year old girl.
Acting on a tip off, the Assam Police crime branch raided Inter State Bus Terminal (ISBT) near Gorchuk area on late Friday night and arrested Julius Dorphang, independent lawmaker.
The Assam police had been conducting search operation to nab the absconding MLA in Guwahati since Thursday evening following intelligence inputs that he has been sheltered by a former insurgent leader.
Soon after his arrest, the Assam police handed over him to Meghalaya police.
Dorphang, the former rebel leader of the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) and now supporting the Mukul Sangma led government, was hiding after Meghalaya police registered a case against him at Laitumkhrah Police Station in Shillong.
He was booked under section 366 (A) of the IPC and under section 3 (a)/4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and under section 5 of Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act.
The sexual exploitation incident came to light last month after a waiter at a guest house owned by Meghalaya Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh’s son was arrested for trafficking the victim.
On January 4, a local court issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against Dorphang.
