About 700 Maoists surrendered after demonetisation: PM Modi


New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday backed his decision of enforcing currency ban saying some 700 Maoists surrendered after demonetisation announcement on Nov 8.

“About 700 Maoists surrendered after demonetisation and this number is increasing. Shouldn’t this make us happy,” Modi said in the Rajya Sabha.

He said corruption has adversely impacted the aspirations of the poor and the middle class.

Modi said: “The fight against corruption and black money is not a political fight. It is not to single out any particular party.”

The Prime Minister said India is witnessing a ‘horizontal divide’ where people are supporting the government on the issue of currency ban.

“There is a horizontal divide- on one side are the people of India & Government and on the other side is a group of political leaders,” Modi said.

He said :”Today India is working to correct the wrongs that entered our society.”

He said institutions like RBI should be kept above politics.
