PATNA: A district town in Bihar celebrated the Independence day by unfurling tri-colour at midnight amid presence of large crowd of villagers.
As the clock struck 12 at midnight, local residents who had gathered in large number at Jhanda Chowk of Purnia town unfurled the flag amid lamp posts to mark 73rd Independence day and shouted “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”.

The tradition, as such, began in the midnight of August 14, 1947. It is said the local villagers had gathered at the radio shop of Manik Mitra on that day to hear news about India’s independence.
As the news of India’s independence was announced on the radio, the local villagers could not hold themselves and unfurled the tri-colour.
The flag was hoisted by one late Rameshwar Prasad Singh. After his death, his descendants have kept the tradition alive.
