PATNA: More than 59,000 people have been jailed for violating liquor laws in Bihar in the past three years. Bihar imposed total liquor ban in April 2016.
According to an official report of the state government, 59,580 people were jailed in between April 01, 2016 to October 31, 2019.
The report further states that police conducted around 4.2 lakh raids to recover the illicit liquor while 59,593 people were arrested in connection with total 69,607 cases registered with the police.
Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar said enforcing liquor ban was the big reformative step of the government which is in the interest of the society.
“Only people with bad mentality are indulged in the liquor business. The Supreme Court too has said in its order that drinking and doing liquor business are not the fundamental rights,” Nitish Kumar said, holding a review meeting over the issue on Saturday.
He said the liquor mafias won’t be spared at any cost.
