17 cops suspended as 5 die after consuming spurious liquor in ‘dry’ Bihar

PATNA: At least five people died after allegedly consuming spurious liquor in Bihar. Incidentally, Bihar was declared a dry state only last year.

All the deaths were reported from Danwar village in Rohtas, a central Bihar district close to Patna, the capital of Bihar state.

The police department while taking the matter seriously promptly placed 17 cops under suspension shortly after the villagers alleged they were instrumental in promoting the liquor trade.

The incident has come as a huge embarrassment to the chief minister Nitish Kumar as the state government has been highlighting it as its major achievement and even asking the governments in other state to follow suit.

Bihar opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav attacked the chief minister over the incident.

“In Bihar, liquor ban is only on papers. Nitish Kumar is not bothered about its implementation and had imposed a complete ban for political benefit,” he alleged.
